What is Hypnosis?

There are many confusing ideas about hypnosis. Some people, especially those influenced by TV or Stage Hypnotists, see it as a kind of mind control. Others see is as simply relaxation.

Both are right, to a degree. Hypnosis involves “mind-control” in that it enables you to regain control of your own mind. It also often involves relaxation, as a means of helping you enter hypnosis.

Do you remember sitting at school, spending hours gazing out of the window? If so, you’re not alone!

Many people can recall times when they have found themselves drifting in their own imagination, day-dreaming, or simply taking a time-out by switching-off from the outside world.

Perhaps you can think of a time when you’ve been totally absorbed while reading a book, cooking or watching a movie? Remember how you zoned out to a point where you didn’t notice what else was going on around you? If so, you’ve experienced a state of mind that’s similar to what happens to you during a hypnotherapy session.

Or, you may have had the experience of driving home from work and wondering where the last 15 minutes when. You have no recollection of maneuvering the 4 roundabouts, going through traffic lights or leaving the dual carriage-way. Yet, you still got home in one piece! In fact, that experience is a perfectly natural one that most people enter at least twice a day. It is what some hypnotherapists call ‘trance’.

In hypnosis, you are not in a zombie-like daze. You simply enter a state of physical, mental and emotional relaxation, along with a heightened state of awareness. It is actually a very enjoyable and rewarding experience, with many people reporting that they enjoyed it so much they did not want it to end!

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a way of helping you enter the state of hypnosis, for the purposes of therapy. Whilst in that frame of mind, it is believed that it’s possible to bypass the conscious mind and speak directly to your subconscious mind. It is safe and completely natural process, which often achieves powerful results where all other methods fail.

For example, most phobias are created in the subconscious mind, in a matter of seconds. So, it’s no surprised that speaking to the conscious mind is not the most effective way of dealing with them. (Wait until someone you know panics at the sight of a spider and try appealing to their reason to dismiss the phobia!) Why not simply go straight to the root of the problem and address their subconscious mind? Hypnotherapy can help you do that, sometimes removing phobias as quickly as they were created.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help You?

This is such an important question that we have a page dedicated to it, here.
